Physiography and Drainage

Q1 What measures are being taken to control pollution in the rivers of India ?

Ans 1} Pollution of Rivers is one of the severe issues which is being faced by the country. Various laws and policies are being framed to control it.
2} Example - The Ganga Action Plan (GAP) Phase 1 and 2 now cover 152 towns. It includes applying sufficient and appropriate pre - treatment into the industrial waste before being discharged into the sewers.
3} Removing solid waste from rivers and applying other river cleaning processes to improve water quality.
4} Various conservation activities include :-  Lake beautification, biodiversity conservation, education and awareness creation, community participation, etc.

Q2 What could be the reasons behind the formation of swamps in the extensive continental location of Pantanal ?

Ans 1} The Pantanal is an immense lowland or alluvial depression that is located along the Paraguay river and it's tributaries, and that becomes extensively flooded during Rainy season.
2} The combination of concentrated rainfall, very reduced topographic slope, small exit area, and poorly drained soils results in a flooded plain which is the main reason for formation of swamps.

Q3 What is the reason that there are no west - flowing rivers in Brazil ?

Ans 1} Most of the rivers in Brazil originate from the Brazilian highlands. The altitude of these highlands decrease from South to North and West to East. So a number of rivers take off from terminal portion of the Brazilian highlands and flow northwards to meet the Atlantic Ocean.
2} The river Sao Francisco flows northwards for a distance of about 1000 km and then takes a sharp eastward turn to enter the coastal strip along the Atlantic Ocean.
3} The Amazon, which is the longest river in Brazil, originates from the eastern slopes of Andes mountains in Peru and flow eastward to meet the north Atlantic Ocean.
4} The Paraguay, Parana and Uruguay rivers originate from the southern slopes of the Brazilian highlands and flow towards the Southwestern parts of Brazil.
Therefore, there are no west flowing rivers in Brazil.

Q4  What is the reason behind the dissimilarities between the eastern and western coasts of India?

Ans 1} The western coast borders, The Arabian sea is by and large, rocky coast. At places, spurs taking off from the western ghats have extended right up to the coast. The width is also less.
2} Rivers originating from western ghats are short and swift and hence they form estuaries in northern deltas.
3} The eastern coast borders, The Bay of Bengal has formed as a result of depositional work of rivers. Many east flowing rivers starting from western and eastern ghats meet this coast.
4} Because of gentle slope of land, rivers flow at lower velocities and deposit the sediments brought with them at the coast.
As a result, deltas are found along these coasts.

Q5 Why are fewer natural ports on eastern coast of India ?

Ans 1} The west coast is a coast of submergence ( except for malabar coast ) while the east coast is a coast of emergence. This implies that the sea is deeper in the western coast than the eastern coast. So the west coast has favourable conditions for natural harbours.
2} The eastern rivers form deltas therefore it becomes difficult for ships to reach the eastern coast covered with sediments.
3} The continental shelf on the east coast extends upto 500 km into the sea so it is difficult to develop good ports and harbours. Ships can enter and leave only during tides.
Hence, there are fewer natural ports on eastern coast of India.

Q6 Why will pollution in Ganga river will affect human life greatly as compared to Amazon river?

Ans 1} The Amazon basin is sparsely populated region. Unfavourable climate, heavy rainfall, inaccessibility and dense forests are barriers to development of human settlements here.
2} On the other hand, The Ganga basin is one of the most densely populated regions of India due to flat, fertile plains, availability of water, suitable climate, dense human settlements have been established in these regions.
3} Mining activities in the Amazon basin causes pollution in the Amazon river, whereas industrial and domestic sewage adds to pollution in River Ganga. But as compared to Amazon, the pollution I river Ganga affects human life greatly as the Ganga plain is densely populated as compared to the Amazon plain.
