Q1 Write some additional information about the post of the Election Commissioner ?
Ans 1) The President of India appoints the Election commissioner.
2) The Chief Election Commissioner cannot be removed from his post easily or on account of any political reasons. This is necessary to preserve the independence of the Election Commission.
3) The Election Commissioner is usually an IAS officer.
4) Sukumar Sen was the first Chief Election commissioner after independence who handled the responsibility of the Election Commission even in adverse conditions.
Q2 What are the functions of the Election Commission ?
Ans The functions of election commission are:
1) Preparing the voters list :- It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to prepare the lot of eligible voters, update the existing voters list and include the names of new voters.
2) Decide the time table and the programme of elections :- The election commission decides when to conduct elections and in how many stages to hold the elections in every state.
3) Scrutiny of the application of candidates :- Candidates of political parties as well as independent candidates have to fill the applications which include the information about their own self. The Election Commission scrutinises all the applications at and allows the eligible candidates to contest the elections.
4) Give recognition to political parties :- The election Commission gives recognition to political parties and also allots symbols to them. It also has the right to derecognise any political party.
5) To resolve any disputes relating to elections :- The Election Commission has the responsibility of resolving any disputes that may arise regarding elections.
Q3 Why does the Election commission lays down the code of conduct during elections ?
Ans 1) Code of conduct explains the rules that are to be followed by the government, political parties and the voters before elections and during elections.
2) Even the government cannot violate those rules.
3) It helps to control malpractices during elections.
4) It ensures free and fair elections in India.
Q4 What are the special circumstances under which the Election Commission holds re-elections in a particular constituency for a second time ?
Ans :- If an elected representative in the Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha or local self-government resigns or due to his / her death his seat becomes vacant, the elections are held for that vacant sent.

Ans 1) In India, The Election Commission is central to the process of elections.
2) It is under the control of the Election Commission that the whole process of election right from the declaration of the date of elections to the announcement of results is carried out.
Q6 Who handles the task of reorganising the constituencies ?
Ans 1) Lok Sabha consists of 543 members.
2) Every member represents one constituency. This means that there are 543 constituencies of Lok Sabha
3) Those constituencies are created by the Delimitation Commission of the election commission.
4) The Delimitation Commission does not succumb to any pressure while restructuring the constituencies.
Q7 How is the journey from the ballot box to EVM machines been ?
Ans 1) After independence, the first election was conducted on between 1951-52. This was the beginning of the shaping of democracy through electoral reforms.
2) Earlier, ballot boxes were used for the purpose of voting.
3) It was later, in the decade of 1990's, Electronic Voting Machines came to be used. An EVM is a simple electronic device which is used to record votes in place of ballot papers and boxes
4) Due to EVM, it has become possible for the voter to choose the option NOTA (Non of the above) when he did not want to vote for any candidate.
5) Disabled people (Divyanga) found it easy to vote through EVM.
6) The use of EVM eliminated the possibility of invalid and doubtful votes, resulted in early declaration of results and made the process eco-friendly.
