Q1 What is a disaster ? What two main types of disasters occur in nature ?
Ans Variously dangerous events that occur many a times in the environment. These are called as disasters. Sudden event that leads to the huge loss of life and property is defined as disaster by United Nations. Disasters are of two types Natural and Human induced man-made disaster.
Q2 What were the reasons for increase in human disasters after World War II ?
Ans 1) Planet Earth has Experienced many natural disasters. Most of them occured in the Asian Continent and the regions of Pacific Ocean.
2) There has been a huge lost of life and property. Due to this imbalance there has been greed to achieve economic progress
among people and nations.
3) Due to population explosion, basic needs increased after the World War.
4) Condition of instability was experienced in the country due to various reasons like economic inequality, racial and religious differences etc.
5) Incidents like terrorism, abduction, social differences have been a routine now.
6) Production and use of harmful chemicals is under ban in developed countries.
However, the production of chemicals which can wipe out the human race is common in developing and the poor countries. Hence, these were the reasons for human disasters after World War II.
Q3 What is forest fire ? What is its effect on environment ?
Ans Forest fire increase carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, contributing to the greanhouse effect and climate change. In addition to the forest fire, ashes destroy much of the nutrients and erode the soil, causing flooding and land slides.
Q4 Explain the 3 phases that are Transitional phase, reconstruction phase and phase of emergency.
Ans : Transitional phase :-
Rehabilitation work is started in this phase, after the subsidence of any type of disaster. It includes clearing of debris, restoring water supply, repairing. roads etc. so that it will help to bring nomalcy in public life. Rehabilitation of aspect of this the victims is important aspect of transitional phase.
Reconstruction phase :-
This is highly complicated phase. This phase begin in transitional phase. Facilities like roads and water suply are restored and people reconstruct their buildings. Farming practices are restarted. It takes long time for reconstruction.
Phase of emergency :-
Maximum lives can be saved by quick actions during this phase only and it's the most important phase. Various actions like medical assistance, search and rescue operations, first aid, removing the people from affected, restoring communication services area are expected in this phase.
